Do you ever go into your living room and feel like something is missing? Like, the atmosphere is a tad bit gloomy? Maybe there’s too much clutter on the coffee table? You clean it up, but something still feels off. Or, maybe, the throw pillows aren’t arranged right? You’ve gone through different arrangements, and it still doesn’t feel right.

Then, perhaps it’s time to update your living space design and consider following the simple guide below to create a more lively and brighter living space.

Focus on letting natural light in

Most living spaces may feel dark and gloomy because there might be a lack of natural light within the room; letting in natural light during the day makes a significant difference to your living space’s overall ambience.

The simplest way to achieve this is to temporarily remove any unnecessary obstructions from your windows during the daytime and let nature do its work. If you feel like taking the risk, you could permanently remove the curtains. If curtainless windows are not your style, you can use sheer curtains that still provide ample privacy while creating your desired brighter living space.

Altering the living space’s visual harmony to your taste

If letting natural light in isn’t enough, another way to a brighter living space design is to consider changing the color, texture, and/or prints of the various decor that make up your living space. These are components that seem insignificant at first. Still, if you’re one with a careful eye for details, you’d realize that they actually contribute a lot to the visual harmony of an area.

The easiest way to achieve a brighter living space is to simply change the color palette of the minor components of the living space into lighter and brighter colors, coupled with an elegant pattern here and there. This could be applied to:

  • the throw pillows on the couch
  • adding artworks that serve as a pop of color
  • replacing the books on the coffee table
  • mix and match sheer, patterned curtains with thick, plain ones

Whatever breathes life into your living space is up to your discretion. If you’re feeling a bit adventurous, you could introduce metals — gold, silver, brass — into the mix. Additionally, if it’s within the budget, you could also change the furniture in the room to either match the new color palette or provide a contrasting effect.

If you’re permitted to take on a larger project than just switching up the decor, another great way to create the image of a brighter living space is to revamp the ceiling, walls, and floors. Given that these are the biggest components of a living space, repainting them in a brighter color or changing the floors to a lighter wood will significantly influence the room’s atmosphere and overall composition. If you’re hesitant to paint all your walls, consider incorporating a textured or patterned accent wall to add visual interest to the area.

Play with lighting placements

Of course, home lighting tips are included in the list as they are the most obvious way to brighten up your living space. Switching up your lighting and its placement deserves its own section because this is an area that addresses the issues of a brighter living space when the sun isn’t up to its job. You could argue that it doesn’t matter as much because any light fixture will do, as long as it serves its purpose, which is to provide light. However, this is important to consider because the different arrangements, sizes, and amounts of light fixtures, intensity of the light, and even the color of the bulb will affect the mood of the area.

For example, opting for a minimal number of light fixtures with warm bulbs, placed in varied corners of the room, will create a more welcoming atmosphere. Conversely, opting for one large centerpiece, accompanied by strategically placed smaller light fixtures, will exude an air of meticulousness and opulence.

There are several factors that contribute to the improvement of a living space design: the amount of natural light in the room, the variety and symmetry in the colors and patterns of your decor, the color of all the sides of the room, the amount and placement of your lighting fixtures, and more. If you desire a brighter living space, one that positively influences the mood within your home, you can start with simply opening the curtains or changing the color palette of your smallest decor and work your way up from there
